In 2009, English football clubs were vying to be one of the host venues for the 2018 World Cup competition should the country win the bid.
Argyle’s prospectus included a redeveloped stadium with a new Mayflower or south stand and a “new ‘Pilgrim Way’ to link the complex to the City Centre via the beautiful walkways of Central Park”. The proposals also included the addition of retail units, a cinema, a hotel and student housing to be built around the redeveloped Home Park, which were all shown on an indicative plan.
Plymouth was successfully selected by the Football Association in December 2009 but, one year later, England secured just one vote at the deciding FIFA meeting and the proposals went no further.
