The pools at Milehouse Corner

Two pools were made in 1931, one for paddling and the other for model boating.  Next to them was a stone-built park shelter and toilets on one side and on the other was the children’s playground by Milehouse corner.

The Mayor, Mr J Clifford Tozer, launched a boat to open the pools as part of the park’s opening ceremony, 29th July 1931.

Numerous children and model boat hobbyists have since made enthusiastic use of the pools until they closed circa 1986 to make way for a car-park extension for the Mayflower Centre and further improvements to the Milehouse road junction. Here is a selection of photos of the pools in use.  If you have pictures that you would like to share, please get in touch.
